In more detail
Training data is everything a model read, saw or heard while it was being built — websites, books, code, conversations, images. The model doesn’t keep those files; it absorbs their patterns, the way you remember lessons from books you’ve long since given away.
It matters because a model is its diet. Gaps in the data become gaps in ability; biases in the data become biases in answers; and anything published after training ended simply isn’t in there. When an AI seems oddly ignorant about something, the training data is usually why.
