Voice cloning recreates a specific person’s voice from a short recording — and can then make that voice say anything, with the same tone, accent and pacing. A photocopier for the most personal identifier you own.

It matters in both directions. The good: dubbing films into other languages in the actor’s own voice, or restoring speech to people losing theirs. The bad: a stranger’s script spoken in a loved one’s voice now powers a wave of phone scams — which is why families are agreeing on code words.
