Watermarking

In one breath

Hiding an invisible statistical signature in AI-generated text, images or audio so it can later be identified as machine-made. Easier said than done.

In more detail

Watermarking hides an invisible signature inside AI-generated content — a statistical pattern woven into word choices or pixels that special software can detect later, though human eyes and ears never notice it. The goal: make ‘was this made by AI?’ answerable with proof instead of guesswork.

It matters as the more honest cousin of AI detectors — checking for a deliberate signature rather than guessing from style. The catch is fragility: rewording text or cropping and re-saving images can weaken the mark, and content from tools that don’t watermark carries no signature at all.

📌 See it in action

An AI image tool weaves a hidden pattern into every picture it produces — invisible to you, unmistakable to its checking software. A news desk runs a suspicious ‘breaking news’ photo through the checker and finds the signature: AI-made, story killed. Cropped and re-compressed, though, the same image might have slipped through unproven.
