Give AI a Character

System prompts, roles, and context — the magic trio

Let's Play Pretend 🎭

Have you ever played pretend as a kid? You'd pick a character — a chef, a doctor, a superhero — and suddenly everything you said came from that character's perspective. AI loves to play pretend. When you tell it "You are a friendly kindergarten teacher," it completely transforms. Its vocabulary changes. Its tone changes. Its examples change. In this chapter, you'll learn three powerful techniques that let you set the scene for AI before it even starts answering: System prompts, Role prompting, and Contextual prompting.

⚙️ System Prompting: Set the Ground Rules

A system prompt is like a rulebook you give AI at the start. It sets how AI should ALWAYS behave throughout the conversation — regardless of what questions come after. Think of it like telling a new employee the company rules before their first day.

Without system prompt ❌
What is photosynthesis?
AI: “Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy in the form of glucose. This process occurs primarily in the chloroplasts...
A fine answer, but written like a textbook — not helpful if you needed it simple.
With system prompt ✅
[SYSTEM: Always explain things using simple words and one fun real-life analogy. Keep responses under 60 words.] What is photosynthesis?
AI: “Plants are like little solar-powered kitchens! 🌱 They take sunlight (energy), water, and air as ingredients, and cook up their own food (called glucose). As a bonus, they breathe out oxygen — the very air we need to live.
Same question. System prompt changed EVERYTHING about the answer.

🎭 Role Prompting: Give AI a Costume

Role prompting is telling AI to BECOME a specific character or expert. It's more than just asking for a certain tone — you're giving AI an entire identity to inhabit.

👨‍⚕️ Friendly Doctor
You are a friendly family doctor. Explain the importance of sleep to a busy college student who thinks sleep is for the weak.
I totally get it — you're pulling all-nighters to get ahead. But here's what's actually happening: sleep is when your brain literally washes itself and files away everything you studied. Skip it, and you're showing up to your exam with a dirty, disorganized brain. 7-8 hours is a performance upgrade, not lost time.
👩‍🍳 Creative Chef
You are a world-class chef who makes even the most basic recipes sound exciting. How do I boil an egg?
Ah, the noble egg! Start with room-temperature eggs — never straight from the fridge. Gently lower them into water that's at a rolling boil (not a violent storm, a confident simmer). 7 minutes for a custardy center, 10 for a firm yolk perfect for slicing. Then an ice bath immediately — this is the secret to easy peeling. Perfection in a shell!

📋 Contextual Prompting: Give AI the Background Story

Context is background information that helps AI understand YOUR specific situation. Without context, AI gives generic answers. With context, it gives answers tailored to YOU.

No context ❌
What should I eat for dinner?
AI: “For a healthy dinner, try grilled chicken with vegetables and brown rice...
Generic. Ignores everything about your life.
With context ✅
Context: I'm a college student, I have 15 minutes to cook, I only have eggs, leftover rice, some soy sauce, and frozen peas. What should I make for dinner?
AI: “Make egg fried rice! Heat oil in a pan, add the rice and peas, push aside and scramble your eggs in the same pan, mix together with soy sauce. 10 minutes, zero cleanup, actually delicious.
Context transformed a generic answer into something genuinely useful.

🏆 The Power Combo: Using All Three Together

System:Always reply in under 100 words. Use encouraging, positive language.
Role:You are a personal fitness coach who specializes in beginners.
Context:I have never exercised before, I work from home, and I only have 20 minutes a day.
Ask:How do I get started with exercise?
AI Response
Perfect starting point! Begin with just 20-minute walks — that's it. Walking is exercise, and it's sustainable. After 2 weeks, add 5 minutes of bodyweight exercises (squats, push-ups from your knees, planks). The key is showing up every day, not going hard. You'll feel the difference in week 3. You've already done the hardest part — deciding to start! 💪
