In more detail
An AI model is ultimately a giant file of numbers — its weights. Open weights means the maker publishes that file, so anyone can download the model and run it on their own computer rather than only renting access to a copy hosted on a company’s servers.
Why it matters: privacy, because your data never leaves your machine; cost, because there are no per-use fees; and control, because nobody can quietly change or retire the model you depend on. It’s the difference between being handed the recipe and only being allowed to order the dish.
