In more detail
Zero-shot means asking a model to do a task cold — no examples, no demonstrations, just instructions. ‘Translate this into French.’ ‘Classify this review as positive or negative.’ The model has never been shown how you want this particular job done; it simply does it.
It matters because this is the everyday magic of modern AI — before LLMs, software needed purpose-built training for every new task. It’s also an honest test of what a model truly knows. And when zero-shot falls short, showing a few examples — few-shot — is the natural next step.
