Model Card

In one breath

The spec sheet published alongside a model: what it was built for, how it was tested, and where it is known to fail. Worth reading before you trust one.

In more detail

A model card is the spec sheet published alongside an AI model: what it was built for, what data shaped it, how it was tested, and — most usefully — where it is known to fail. Think of it as the nutrition label of the AI world.

It matters because models constantly get used for things they were never designed to handle. The card is where a maker states the limits plainly: not evaluated for medical advice, weaker in certain languages, trained on data that stops at a certain point. Reading it first is how professionals avoid nasty surprises.

📌 See it in action

A clinic considers a model for summarizing doctors’ notes. Its model card states it was built for general text, was never evaluated on medical content, and is known to fumble drug names. Ten minutes of reading redirects the clinic to a health-specific model — exactly the disaster the card exists to prevent.
